Design and development of novel antibacterial Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory alloys for biomedical application

چکیده
In the case of medical implants, foreign materials are preferential sites for bacterial adhesion and microbial contamination, which can lead to the development of prosthetic infections. Commercially biomedical TiNi shape memory alloys are the most commonly used materials for permanent implants in contact with bone and dental, and the prevention of infections of TiNi biomedical shape memory alloys in clinical cases is therefore a crucial challenge for orthopaedic and dental surgeons. In the present study, copper has been chosen as the alloying element for design and development novel ternary biomedical Ti‒Ni‒Cu shape memory alloys with antibacterial properties. The effects of copper alloying element on the microstructure, mechanical properties, corrosion behaviors, cytocompatibility and antibacterial properties of biomedical Ti‒Ni‒Cu shape memory alloys have been systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that Ti‒Ni‒Cu alloys have good mechanical properties, and remain the excellent shape memory effects after adding copper alloying element. The corrosion behaviors of Ti‒Ni‒Cu alloys are better than the commercial biomedical Ti‒50.8Ni alloys. The Ti‒Ni‒Cu alloys exhibit excellent antibacterial properties while maintaining the good cytocompatibility, which would further guarantee the potential application of Ti‒Ni‒Cu alloys as future biomedical implants and devices without inducing bacterial infections.

TRANSFORMATION BEHAVIOR OF NiTi SHAPE MEMORY ALLOYS TREATED BY THERMOMECHANICAL PROCESSING USING DSC
Abstract: In the present study the effect of thermomechanical treatment (cold work and annealing) on the transformation behavior of NiTi shape memory alloys was studied. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine transformation temperature and its relation to precipitates and defects. Three alloys including Ti-50.3at.% Ni, Ti-50.5at.% Ni (reclamated orthodontic wires) and 50.6at...
متن کاملCorrosion of Ni-Ti Rotary Instruments: A Review
The nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) alloys used in endodontics contain 56% Ni and 44% Ti. The 2 unique features related to clinical dentistry (i.e., shape memory effect and superelasticity) are due to the transition from austenite to martensite in Ni-Ti alloy. When a superelastic Ni-Ti alloy undergoes a low tensile loading, normal elastic behavior occurs. In fact, at higher tensile loads, the elastic s...

The influence of the martensitic, martensitic+austenitic and austenitic structures in bending training on two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) in Ni-50.8 at %Ti and Ni-49.9 at %Ti alloys was studied. In addition of the primary structure, the effect of pre-strain, plastic strain, training cycle and training temperature on the TWSME was investigated. The prepared samples were trained in martensiti...
متن کاملThe Development of Shape Memory Actuators for Anthropomorphic Upper Limb Prostheses
The single crystal Cu-Al-Ni alloys became generally commercialized. It can be observed that response time of any single crystal Cu-Al-Ni-based shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator is greater than the necessary when it is used for human prosthesis. Moreover, the electrical SMA actuator type with better performance than the thermal one is very problematic for this type of crystal due to its low elec...
